Yes, I’m talking the ObamaCare tanning salon excise tax – it went into effect yesterday. As near as I can tell, it’s the only operative part of ObamaCare.
I feel my health care improving as I write this …

Excerpted from: Businessweek, Tanning Salon Patrons Face 10% Tax for Glowing Skin, July 01, 2010,
The price of looking good increases by 10 percent on July 1 when a tax on indoor tanning created by the U.S. health-care reform bill takes effect.
The tax is expected to raise $2.7 billion over 10 years, according to a March 10 estimate by the Joint Committee on Taxation.
Small-business owners will be hurt by the tax …
- There are more than 20,000 tanning salons in the U.S.
- Women own 67 percent of them
- The industry employs about 140,000 people
Centers that use spray-on services or lotions are exempt from the tax.

I have a problem with this one because I like to tan. But also $2.7 Billion seems rather small over 10 years. Fast food chains seem like a much better target. Hoovers states fast food annual revenue is $120B; a 10% tax would be $12B in one year.
There would be a much stronger alignment with healthcare costs if they taxed fast food chains that serve any item with over 1000 calorie content. (McDonalds Angus Bacon and Cheese is 2070 calories.) Nutritional labels on foods you buy that list “percent daily values”: are based on a 2000 calorie diet, which I believe is from the FDA.
Oh wait, then Obama would have to stop making public comments like “I don’t want any lectures about my cholesterol. Don’t tell Michelle.” http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/03/03/obama-chows-down-dont-tell-michelle/
