When was the last time DC had a “real” snowstorm?

First, a definition: anything less than 2 inches doesn’t count as a “real” snow event …

According to the Wash Post, the frequency of 2” snow storms per year has been steadily declining.

And, the answer to the question …

It’ has been almost two years since Washington’s last “real” snow event – the so-called “Commutageddon” storm of January 26, 2011 – when 5 inches blanketed the city.

So, DC has gone 708 days without a 2 inch or greater snowfall, the longest span on record dating back to the late 1800s.

  • Note: Roughly 705 days ago I bought 3 – yes, 3 snow shovels from Amazon … so I claim credit for instigating the drought.

For the prior 10 “snow droughts”, the average number of days with no 2 inch or greater snows was 331 days, or roughly 11 months.

The longest prior drought was 451 days. long 451 days.

In other words, DC is long overdue.

And, historically, DC gets over 80% of its snow from January to April each year.

So, don’t put away the snow shovel – or shovels — away just yet.

Tick, tick, tick
