From the “you can’t make this stuff up” file …
Last year a fried filed his NJ income tax return using Turbo Tax,
Based on the TurboTax calculations, he filed for a refund of $2,582.
A few weeks later, the State sent him a refund check for $3,556.
Not quite Power Ball, but a nice surprise.
Now, a few months later, the story takes an odd twist …
Last week, my friend received a payment due notice for, you guessed it, the difference between what Turbo Tax calculated and the refund issued by NJ, plus $50.04 interest (about 4.3%) on the excess refund.
Said differently, NJ gave my friend an unsolicited $1,000 loan … and charged him a fairly steep interest rate for it …. even though it was their mistake.
As I said, you can’t make this stuff up.
And, think about it … ObamaCare is going to be enforced by the IRS and its cousins in the state revenue offices.
Heaven help us.
