You read that right …
Uzbekistan Airways is going to start weighing passengers before flight
======
Here’s what’s going on …
======
According to CNBC …
Uzbekistan Airways announced that it would begin pre-flight weighing of passengers.
Why?
“To determine the average weight of passengers and their carry-on luggage.”
Why?
The airlines says that the procedure “is strictly for research purposes and will aid the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in ensuring flight safety.”
The record of passenger weights will remain anonymous, according to the airline. Instead, weights will be categorized by gender or age, if the passenger is a child.

Flashback
Last year Samoan Airlines’ started charging customers by weight.
See Samoa Air: Pricing by weight is the ‘concept of the future’
As a profit-maximizing pricer, I’ve been predicting that airlines would eventually start pricing by the pound.
My bet: the practice will die of its own weight (<= pun intended).
But, if it spreads, it may be a useful weapon in the fight against obesity.
