Kudos to Cuomo for nudging the Feds
=============
You’ve probably heard some chatter about Hydroxychloroquine.
Hydroxychloroquine is a decades old anti-malaria drug that some researchers are advocating for “repurposing” to attack COVID-19.
Here’s what you need to know…
============
The optimism is based on (1) a small-scale peer- reviewed study done in France — 40 COVID infected subjects were successfully treated, and (2) a sociological-type analysis that found a low incidence of COVID-19 in countries that have, in the past, been heavily treated for malaria with Hydroxychloroquine.
While the efficacy in treating COVID-19 isn’t “proven” based on FDA protocols, it sure sounds promising.
And, it’s safety has been indisputably demonstrated in treating malaria patients.
Conceivably, some interaction with COVID-19 could cause a safety issue, but the scientific consensus seems to be that it can be deemed safe.
So, I wanted to scream when the now beloved Dr. Fauci started hemming and hawing in a press conference about how there needs to be full scale clinical tests before Hydroxychloroquine can be approved for use on COVID-19 patients.
BULL!
I say: If it’s safe, take a risk on the efficacy.
Worst case: the COVID-curing properties are overstated and we are where we are.
Best case: We turn the corner on this health crisis.
===============
Cuomo’s plan is to obtain 10,000 doses of Hydroxychloroquine and immediately start a large-scale clinical test in New York.
It’s a sensible, bold stroke … that could be a game-changer.
Let’s hope Cuomo can mow over road blocks (e.g. Fed slow-rolling and slow scale-up of production) … and get the clinical test rolling.
