Remember Rep. Joe Wilson’s notorious shout out: “You lie!”

During the 2010 State-of-the Union address, Rep. Joe Wilson of SC shouted “You lie” when Pres. Obama was going through a list of what ObamaCare would and would not do.

First, let’s all agree that Wilson’s  outburst was completely inappropriate for the venue.

That said, how does the substance of his shout out stack up?

Let’s start with a softball and then advance the story …

Obama has said repeatedly:

“If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.

Many news reports have estimated that as many as 16 million folks will have their current policies – which they liked – cancelled because they don’t meet the ObamaCare coverage mandates. Source

After a couple of weeks of stonewalling, the Administration is modifying its position … conceding that the oft repeated promise isn’t true.

Campaign strategist David Axlerod tested out a new line on Morning Joe: “The majority — the vast majority — will be able to keep their plans.”

Technical point: “vast majority” is not the same as “all”. Period.

Press Secretary Jay Carney refined Axlerod’s concession:  “It’s true there are existing health care plans on the individual market that do not meet those minimum standards and therefore do not qualify for the Affordable Care Act.” Source

Both Axlerod and Carney say that folks whose policies are cancelled will be able to get better policies – move coverage for cheaper.

There’s lots of contrary evidence re: price … whether the new policies will be cheaper than the old.

Carney and Axlerod counter with the “more coverage” argument.

You know, coverage that people have been clamoring for … like maternity & paternity benefits for seniors, coverage for your neighbor’s 25 year old adult-child, condoms for law students, etc.

Maybe … just maybe … some folks just don’t want to pay for that kind of added coverage.

The implicit rejoinder:  “You’re too stupid to decide what coverage you’re happy with … we’ll decide what you’re happy with.”

Now let’s connect some dots.

Specifically, Rep. Wilson’s outburst came when the President said that illegals wouldn’t be covered … only legal citizens.

Fast forward to today.

Now, why would the Administration be going out of its way to explicitly tell folks not to worry?

Draw your own conclusion … but, gotta warn you, don’t ask Rep. Wilson about it.

A good friend of mine who is self-employed had catastrophic-only insurance for himself that allowed him to pay the minimum premium per month. He will now lose his insurance because it does not meet the minimum requirements of Obamacare, and his available options will now require him to pay substantially more per month.
