Well, it depends on your metric.

In terms or raw number of murders, Chicago has led the league for the past 2 years … with 412 murders in 2013 alone.

As should be expected, big cities dominate the top 10 list … partly a matter of sheer population size.

Which U.S. city has the highest per capita murder rate?

According to a Pew Research’s analysis of FBI data, New Orleans is the undisputed U.S. Murder Capital.

New Orleans had the highest per capita murder rate in 12 of the past 28 years.

Washington, D.C. is the runner-up, having led the nation 8 of the past 28 years.

Chicago doesn’t even make the chart.
