Rand Paul cuts to the chase re: meddling…

Though often annoying, Rand Paul is consistent on a couple of important issues (think privacy and non-intervention) … and has an ability to to hone in on pivotal conclusions.

This week — after the Trump-Putin meeting — Sen. Paul cut to the chase on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections…

Paraphrasing Sen. Paul’s case::

1. All countries who have the capability to spy of other countries – friends or foes – do so.

2. Similarly, countries that have the capability to meddle in other countries’ elections do so when it is to their advantage.

3 Therefore, shouldn’t expect bad actors to cease and desist either spying or meddling.

4. So, it’s in a country’s best interests to build strong defenses to counter spying and election meddling – e.g. cybersecurity and voting processes (e.g. decentralization, non-digital back-ups)

Re; meddling specifically, Sen. Paul cited a research study done by Prof. Dov Levin from the Institute for Politics and Strategy at Carnegie Mellon University.

Prof. Levin’s study  concluded:

There were 117 “partisan electoral interventions” between 1946 and 2000.

The majority of these (partisan electoral interventions) – almost 70 per cent – were cases of US interference.

The countries where secret tactics have been deployed by the US include: Guatemala, Brazil, El Salvador, Haiti, Panama, Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Greece, Italy, Malta, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, South Vietnam and Japan.

For Russia, the list of covert interventions includes: France, Denmark, Italy, Greece, West Germany, Japan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Congo, Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, and the US.

Sen. Paul’s point: Those who live in glass houses…” shouldn’t be so sanctimonious … and certainly, should never be surprised when, as Forrest Gump would say, “what goes around comes around”.
