Huh: Home Depot using a cat to up its likability …

According to BrandChannei

“Richard the Cat, a.k.a., Pundit of People, remains Home Depot’s meme of choice as the brand welcomes spring some out-of-character humor.

The orange feline follows a human family as they pursue scores of DIY projects with questionable results and predictable mishaps.”

“Everyone has elves, reindeer, Santa, but one of the biggest things followed in the social space is cats”

HD is taking a chance on the cat meme since the two are an odd pairing.

The Home Depot brand is authentic, innovative and attainable, while Richard’s cat-sona is sarcastic, superior and refined.

HD’s CMO says: “When I shared this with our leadership team, our CEO got it immediately.

We’re very lucky we have one of the hippest CEOs out there.”

Hmmm.

Here may be the rub for Home Depot …

According to USA Today

Clearly, there are dog people and there are cat people.

But it’s not much of a contest: 74 percent of people like dogs a lot, and only 41 percent like cats a lot.

Cats win the dislike vote handily.

15 percent of the adults questioned said they disliked cats a lot while the number who said they disliked dogs a lot was just 2 percent.

Dogs come out on top because “They have more personality. They are loyal”

And cats can be destructive … they kill robins, quail and squirrels in back yards”.

Previously, we posted Cats-to-Go: “That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer” about a movement in New Zealand to get rid of all cats.

Pick a character that less than half the population likes … and that 1 in 8 dislike a lot.

Hmmm.

Might work.

Come to think of it, it seems to work for Capital One with Alec Baldwin.
