NLRB Orders CNN to Rehire 100 Employees Fired in 2003 …. say,what?

According to Variety – the entertainment industry paper of record …

The National Labor Relations Board has ordered CNN to rehire 100 workers as part of a labor dispute that originated in 2003.




This initially caught my eye because of the defendant … CNN.

Demonstrating non-partisanship, the NLRB isn’t targeting Fox … it’s going after administration-friendly CNN.

And, the story gets better …



You caught the date, right?


By my count, that’s 11 years ago, right?

No statute of limitations for the NLRB.

My questions:

  1. How can they even find those “Impacted workers”?
  2. If they do find them, any chance that Father Time has softened their skills a bit?
  3. What the hell have these “impacted workers” been doing for the past 11 years?

They certainly haven’t been working.

Variety says: “The 11-year dispute stems from CNN’s decision to replace a unionized subcontractor called Team Video Services, which provided the network with audio and video technicians, with an in-house nonunion work force in its Washington and New York bureaus.”

Think about that for a second.

What CNN did was can a costly sub-contractor and have the work done by their own employees.

Sound reasonable to me.

What’s the rub?

“The Communication Workers of America claimed that CNN’s 2003 decision had amounted to a phony reorganization scheme to get rid of unionized workers.

The Labor Board found “overwhelming” evidence of anti-union animus in CNN’s … decision to terminate the subcontracts. “

Ergo, the decision to force re-hiring of the aggrieved employees.

Apparently, if the sub-contractor had not been unionized, it would have been “no harm no foul.”

But, the sub-contractor was unionized, so CNN has to re-hire them.


My final question: How do you think the “impacted workers” will feel when they have to get off the couch, turn off the TV and head to work for the first time in 11 years.

I must be missing something.
