Maybe the Russians didn’t hack the DNC …

I’ve got an alternative scenario for you.

Last week, focus shifted from fake news to Russian hacking intended to help Trump get elected.

There’s hand-wringing and outrage that the Russians might have tried to impact a U.S. election by revealing Hillary’s emails..

President Obama has ordered that an investigation be done and a report on his desk by the time he leaves office (i.e. right before President-elect Trump gets sworn in).

Most recently, U.S. intelligence officials fingered the Russians but have conceded that (1) they are basing their views on deductive circumstantial reasoning and not conclusive evidence and (2) they are uncertain as to motive. Source

I’ve got an alternative deduced scenario for you.  Let’s connect some dots on this one …

On Sunday, 60 Minutes interviewed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

That got me thinking …

1) The Israelis are known to have a very sophisticated intelligence capability … including cyber-intelligence.

To that point, the Israelis claim that “we are ahead of the rest of the world in digital capabilities by at least 15 years.”

Tech note:

Cyber sleuths claim to have found left-behind code written in Cyrillic.

Why would sophisticated hackers make such an egregious mistake?

Even if true, what would keep sophisticated cyber-agents from planting a few Cyrillic seeds to implicate the Russians?

2) The Obama Administration tried hard to influence the Israeli election — implicitly and directly.

As CNN reported:

Former State Department official Aaron David Miller said the Obama administration is now sending “certain unmistakable signals” that Netanyahu isn’t the right prime minister to manage the U.S.-Israel relationship.

“We clearly had our favorites and we wanted Peres to win,” Miller recounted.

“[The idea] that we don’t intercede in Israeli politics is as foolish an assumption as that they don’t interfere in ours,” Miller said.

And, as The Hill reported:

President Obama’s role during the Israeli elections was larger than reported, according to a pollster for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party.

“What was not well reported in the American media is that President Obama and his allies were playing in the election to defeat Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

“There was money moving that included taxpayer U.S. dollars, through non-profit organizations.

And there were various liberal groups in the United States that were raising millions to fund a campaign called V15 against Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

V15 was viewed as part of a broader campaign to oust Netanyahu.

The group was linked to Washington-based nonprofit OneVoice Movement, which reportedly received $350,000 in State Department grants.

Of course, Netanyahu won the election.

As the original Grandma Homa used to say “If you’re gonna shoot, make damn sure that you don’t miss.”

3) Perhaps the most damning of the released DNC emails was one that raised the question of Bernie Sanders’ Jewish faith.

According to Politico:

A top staffer at the Democratic National Committee has apologized after suggesting that the organization use Bernie Sanders’ religious beliefs against him in the Democratic primary.

That’s a no-no.

I have absolutely no idea who hacked the DNC email system and released the emails, but I do love conspiracy theories.

Nobody likes the Russians, right?

So pin it on them … not much downside … and, might somehow slow Trump out of the starting gate.

That’s where the conventional wisdom seems to be.

But, keep in mind that that the Israelis had (1) the means – sophisticated cyber-intelligence capability that could easily “spoof” Russian hacking (2) a motive – you know, that old eye-for-an-eye thing since we meddled in their election and (3) opportunity – since the DNC had lax cyber-security.

Hillary promised to continue Obama’s policies, right?

Gotta assume that meant a continuation of chilly relations with Israel.

So, maybe the hackers weren’t pro-Trump necessarily … maybe they were just like millions of Americans who were #NeverHillary.

Gotta consider all possibilities, right?

The troubling part is that Trump doesn’t seem concerned that there was hacking at all. He’s not even pretending to be curious. On the contrary, he says only “sore losers” would care. Either he knows who did it and doesn’t want to be caught, or he has no idea and doesn’t care that a foreign power is capable of such cyber espionage.

    Let’s also not forget:

    4) Obama administration and high ranking Democrats completely shunning Netanyahu when he was in DC to mend relations (post Israeli election), and present his case against further Iran nuclear negotiations to a joint session of Congress (hosted by Boehner);

    5) Obama administration’s recent cash payment of ~$1.7B to Iran for prisoners and closing this nuclear deal, which was against Israel firm objections (Netanyahu and his administration was livid):

    6) Israel’s increasing fear over Iran’s nuclear enrichment programs, Iran’s work with N.Korea and its support + funding of terrorist activities, and it’s open criticism of perceived lack of effectiveness by current US administration. Here’s an interesting clip from Dick Cheney’s documentary produced by Showtime about intel in 2006. Also gives insight into why our involvement with Syria today is so critical 10+ years later (in addition to oil):
