Did Kavanaugh make a fatal gaffe during the FOX interview?

A couple of things that he and wife Ashley said are head-scratchers.

First, let’s deal with the stupid (but not fatal)  “I was a  virgin” answer.

Here’s the relevant part of the transcript:

B. Kavanaugh: We’re talking about an allegation of sexual assault.

I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone.

I did not have sexual intercourse or anything close to sexual intercourse in high school or for many years there after.

What was he thinking? Why didn’t he stop after “never assaulted anyone”?

Being a virgin (at the time)  isn’t  a compelling defense point … and opens Kavanaugh up to ridicule and dispute.

It was a totally unforced error that is a distraction … but, not a fatal wound.

There was a way more serious gaffe.  If haven’t heard it called out by the pundits. See if you can spot it:

MacCallum asked a very general question.. Kavanaugh gave a very specific answer:

MacCallum:  This Christine Ford, do you know her?

B. Kavanaugh: I may have met her, we did not travel in the same social circle, she was not a friend, not someone I knew –

MacCallum: You don’t remember ever being at parties with her ever?

B. Kavanaugh: I do not.  And this is an allegation about a party in the summer of 1982 at a house near Connecticut Avenue and East West highway with five people present.

My neck snapped on this one.

The accuser said she wasn’t sure about the time (either 1981 or 1982) or place (maybe close to a country club).

That has been a major defense point: she doesn’t even know when and where.

But, Kavanaugh pinned things down:

“1982 at a house near Connecticut Avenue and East West highway.”

Where the hell did that come from?

The accuser doesn’t remember, but the accused knows when and where a party didn’t happen.

Huh?

I’ve been following this circus pretty closely and haven’t seen these details.

Where did Kavanaugh get the info?

He’d better have a good answer on Thursday.

Otherwise, it might be fatal.

=============

Finally, I think that wife Ashley missed a once-in-a-lifetime golden opportunity.

MacCallum: All right. Ashley how’s this spin for the girls, for your family?  What have you guys – give us what ever window you feel comfortable saying about what this has been like for you as a family?

A. Kavanaugh:  This – it’s very difficult.

It’s very difficult these conversations with your children, which we’ve had to have some broader terms for our youngest.

But they know Brett.

And they know the truth.

And we told them at the very beginning of this process this will be not fun sometimes.

You’re going to hear things that, people feel strongly, and you need to know that.

And just remember you know your dad

A sincere answer, but…

MacCallum gave Ashley a wide open question …a chance to say anything on her mind … a chance to take a whack at the process (and indirectly at the accuser).

I was expecting

“It’s been a horrific situation, especially for the girls.

They’re hearing people say horrible things about their father.

False accusations that their father has done horrible things.

In their hearts they know it’s not true, but it hurts then deeply and will scar them for the rest of their lives.

I don’t hear any concerns about the damage that these horrible lies have on us and our girls.

It’s not a political game, it’s our lives.”

And, a few tears would have helped.

I hope that Ashley is now cued up to take a better swing if she gets another fastball down the middle of the plate..

===========

Bottom line: I don’t thing Kavanaugh was well prepped for the interview.

He’d better bring his A-game on Thursday.
