Is Virginia going to jump the abortion shark?

OK, New York  passed legislation legalizing abortions right up to the point of delivery.

Pro-lifers grimaced; pro-choicers rejoiced.

Not to be outdone, Virginia started the ball rolling to reduce restrictions on late-term abortions.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist, explained the implications in a radio interview on WTOP.

Northam said that Virginia’s current law allows abortions up to the point of delivery in cases when the mother’s life or health was at serious risk.

The proposed law goes a big step further:

“If a mother is in labor, the infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.” Source

Say, what?

I think that both pro-lifers and pro-choicers probably scratched their heads and wondered if they heard the governor correctly … especially since he said the “infant” would be made comfortable and, maybe resuscitated.

To some people, those words suggest death after life … which moves the debate to a much higher level.

Putting the ethical and philosophical debate aside, I’m intrigued by the politics of the NY and VA actions.

As the chart above illustrates, Gallup reports that roughly 6 in 10 Americans think that abortions should be legal in the first 3 months of a women’s pregnancy.

But, the support level drops to 28% in the 2nd trimester … and, falls to only 14% thinking that  3rd trimester abortions should be legal.

Politically-speaking, legalizing abortions in the 3rd trimester (or later?)  doesn’t seem like a position on the abortion issue that Dems should want to be advocating (defending?) in the run-up to the 2020 elections.

The Left in this country has become so deranged nothing surprises me any more. However, I did have to to shake my head and blink my eyes a number of times in disbelief when I first heard this. Then I remembered that Obama once stated that even if a child was actually delivered it was OK to kill it if the mother had actually intended to abort. (If I am wrong I hope someone will correct me.) So maybe I should be surprised.
I left the Democratic party a long time ago when I concluded that its professed solutions to our society’s woes were for the most part ineffective and counter productive. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2020 when this divided nation votes again. I would think decent, God-fearing and law abiding people would consider much of the Left’s platform atrocious.

If the Left would agree that science has proven that life begins at conception, I might be willing to buy the Left’s argument that climate change is real. But models are certainly not solid research.
