Test: How many border apprehensions this year?

Before you keep reading or glance at the chart, take this current events test…

About how many people do you think will be caught trying to enter through the southern border this year?

A variant of that question was asked in the April Harvard-Harris Poll.  Specifically, the survey asked:

About how many people do you think are caught trying to enter through the southern border each year?

Here are the results:

Note that about half of respondents think the number is less than 100,000; only 12% peg it at more than 500,000.

So, how accurate are people’s perception?

=============

Well, not very accurate.

Some benchmarks:

There were nearly 100,000 border apprehensions in April, alone.

At current rates, experts project there will be 863,000 border apprehensions this Fiscal Year.

Note: These are only illegal aliens who are caught at the border and does not include those who successfully cross.

Maybe folks were confused between “monthly” and “each year”.

But, I doubt it

Or, maybe they were thinking “each year” didn’t mean “this year” … but rather was an average of the past decade or so.

That doesn’t work either.

Over the past decade, apprehensions have averaged more than 500,000 annually (more than 40,000 monthly)

A more likely explanation is that the real numbers don’t jibe with the “manufactured crisis” narrative being pedaled by mainstream media.
