Trump versus “The Squad”

Unforced error or political brilliance?
=============

These days — with the S&P over 3,000 and all politicians proving to be incompetent idiots — I’m finding politics decreasingly interesting, save for its entertainment value.

And, there’s plenty of that, for sue.

Cue Trump’s shocking (?) weekend tweet … and the nationally televised press conference by the self-named “Squad”.

Let’s run through that …

=============

In one corner, you’ve got Trump.

OK, Trump posted a tweet that was perceived by many (most? all?) to be xenophobic and racist.

No new news there, right?

By now everybody has either branded Trump as racist and xenophobic and hates him … or, looks past his crude tweets and likes the things he’s getting done (e.g. sorry, this isn’t former President Obama’s economy).

In the other corner, you’ve got the Squad.

Their leader — AOC — is an interesting character.

She’s charismatic, authentic, passionate, articulate, etc. No question about that.

She’s a force to be reckoned with despite her shallowness of thought and fundamentally socialist laundry list of free stuff for all.

For hoots, see Why AOC is the Taylor Swift of the Democratic Party

I was surprised by a Dem-sponsored poll — reported in left-leaning Axios — that AOC has a low 22%  favorability rating among the 74% of the population who knew who she was.

I wasn’t surprised that the poll found that “socialism is toxic to voters” … viewed favorably by 18% of the voters and unfavorably by 69%.

==============

That said, I’m surprised that AOC is diluting her brand by teaming up with the other 3 Squad members who — in my opinion — are fundamentally unlikable.

For example, Axios also reports that  “Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota — another member of The Squad — was recognized by 53% of the voters; 9% (not a typo) had a favorable view.”.

Why would AOC want to drag down her 22% favorability?

==============

Back to “unforced error” or “political brilliance”….

In the past week, they’ve branded the likes of Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi and many of their fellow (Southern) Dems as racists.

Really?

That just throws Trump in with a big pack … diminishing the impact of the charge.

But, it prompted the nationally televised news conference — elevating the Squad as as the face of the Democratic party.

Re-read the poll results above if you don’t see why that’s a problem for Pelosi and the Dems.

Pelosi had been trying to isolate the Squad as inconsequential:

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world …but they didn’t have any following.

They’re four people, and that’s how many votes they got.” Source

But, she had no choice but to jump into the Trump-Squad fray, supporting them … and, in effect re-mainlining them.

=============

OK, let’s recap the bidding….

More circumstantial evidence that Trump is careless … and demonstrates racist and xenophobic tendencies.

That argues for unforced error.

But, all Dem presidential candidates pushed out of the news … and, The Squad elevated to a lofty position as the  face of the Democratic party.

Political brilliance?

It’ll be entertaining to see how this one plays out.
