Manchin says not to worry: “I won’t vote for crazy things.”

And, there’s probably more to the story.
============

During a blockbuster interview, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin didn’t mince words.

Manchin said he wanted to “reduce Americans anxiety” about the possibility of the Dems taking control of the Senate.

He said clearly and definitively that, as a tie-blocking vote,  he’d vote NO on “crazy things” like ending the filibuster, court packing, defunding the police and the Green New Deal..

Note: He didn’t mention statehood for DC and P.R., but it’s fair to assume that he’d lump that among the crazy things.

This is the single most refreshing statement I’ve heard from a politician in years.

The entire interview is well worth the listening time.

Of course, there’s more to the story…

==============

There are rumors that McConnell is working behind the scenes to lure Manchin over to the GOP side, possibly offering him a high profile committee chairmanship (e.g. Energy – West VA’s central issue).

That makes sense because…

West Virginia is very blue … 70% of the 2020 votes went to President Trump, junior WVA Senator Capito and incumbent Governor Justice.

As a Democrat, Manchin will face reelection headwinds in 2024 … especially if Biden’s war on oil, gas and coal gets any traction.

It’s easy for me to imagine Manchin switching parties … then running for president in 2024 as a Republican.

If he did, and if he lives up to his interview declarations, I’d vote for the guy in a heartbeat.
