Which states do people view most (and least) favorably?

July 6, 2015

YouGov ran a poll asking a national sample which states were viewed favorably … and which were viewed unfavorably.

Then, they ranked states based on the net difference between favorable and unfavorable views.

The winner: sunny paradise Hawaii.

Interestingly, the rest of the top 10 is dominated by northern and mountain states.

Guess which state has the lowest favorability rating …

Which states’ residents are most impacted by Obama’s plan to raise taxes on the rich?

September 12, 2012

This may be common knowledge, but it was a surprise to me …

Based on the 2009 census data (latest available), just under 4% of U.S. households have income greater than $200,000.

Below are the 20 states with the highest proportion of households with incomes greater than $200,000 … led by DC, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland (a suburb of DC).

The interesting part:

15 of the states (or 16 depending on how you count Colorado) are Blue- Democratic states

… only 3 are Red-Republican states

… 2 are Purple-Swing states.

Hmmm.

They’re the states whose GDP has grown the most from 2000 to 2010.

Great analysis in USA Today re: state-by-state shifts in the US economy.

A couple of angles from the data:

  • No surprise, income-tax-free Texas is soaring; Midwest rustbelt is struggling
  • 10 states generate over 1/2 of the US GDP
  • “Swing states” have slowest rates of growth (2nd chart)

Hmmm …
