Maybe the Russians didn’t hack the DNC …

July 28, 2016

I’ve got an alternative scenario for you.

========

DNC operatives are trying to shift the conversation from the substance of the purloined DNC emails … to the hackers … blaming the Russians for being pro-Trump and releasing the emails to spoil Hillary’s campaign.

There’s hand-wringing and outrage that the Russians might be trying to impact a U.S. election.

Even President Obama has weighed in.

clip_image002
=======

But,  U.S. intelligence officials have conceded that they are basing their views on deductive reasoning and not conclusive evidence. Source

I’ve got an alternative deduced scenario for you.  Let’s connect some dots on this one …

Did Comey outsource Hillary’s prosecution to Putin?

July 27, 2016

Did Comey punt to American voters: let them decide if Hillary is guilty and whether it matters?

The DNC email flap has given rise to another possible adjudicator- designate: the Russians.

clip_image002

=======

For the record, HomaFiles was early on to this one.

The day after Comey dished Hillary her stay-out-of-jail-free card – we posted:

The Russians claim to have Hillary’s emails in their possession.

What if they release a couple of damning ones?

See Why did Comey choke on the biggest decision of his career?

Let’s flashback …

What if disaffected Bernie fans go Green or Libertarian?

July 26, 2016

Let’s connect a couple of dots today …

1) The DNC was caught red-handed trying to extinguish, or at least, contain Bernie Sanders.

2) The purloined emails threw some gasoline on the smoldering Bernie embers … maybe not for him, but for many of his supporters.

3) Dem-darling pollster Nate Silver says that Bernie supporters aren’t “reliable voters” …  based on historical data, they tend to stay home rather than vote for “imperfect” candidates.

4) For avid Bernie supporters who are still likely to vote, Hillary isn’t a 2nd choice … she’s part of “the problem”.

Here’s the pay-off punch:

According to yesterday’s CNN poll, the Libertarian & Green candidates (Johnson & Stein) are getting some traction  … and they’re approaching critical mass — a combined 21% — among the under 45 crowd — many of whom still feel the Bern.

image

=========

Think about that for a moment …

Disaffected Bernie supporters are unlikely to bolt to Trump … but they may stay home … or, go Green or Libertarian … either as a protest vote or because they think one of those long-shot candidates can get into the debates and be a factor.

Keep your eye on the migration from Hillary to the 3rd parties.

Thanks to SMH for planting the seed.

Another line from Melania’s speech to scrutinize …

Hmmm.

Both proud of being Americans … for about the same length of time … Melamia for a little longer.

Wonder why the mainstream media didn’t make a plagiaristic cause celebre out of this one?

Too nuanced, perhaps?

Or, too sharp of a contrast?

Trumpspeak: It’s all about the way he talks …

July 22, 2016

Trump’s speech last night had some clear takeaways: (1) law & order  (2) anti-terrorism  (3) outreach to both LGBTQs and Evangelicals (4) dignity and economic hope for the working class.

The speech was civilized .. which was probably disappointing those folks who were rooting for a crash & burn.

My opinion: he came across as a credible “blue-collar billionaire” …  has genuine empathy for the working class …. still, a bit rough around the edges.

 Breaking: CNN “snap poll” reports that 74% of viewers had a favorable reaction to Trump’s speech.

The speech reminded me of a great piece in the Washington Post by Barton Swaim author of “The Speechwriter: A Brief Education in Politics.”

His basic conclusion: “The most distinctive about Trump … is the structure of his language.”

Why did Ted Cruz give the kind of speech he did at the RNC convention … and refuse to endorse Trump?

In a news conference Thursday, Cruz asserted that he it was because he’s “a man of principle who keeps his word.”

Really?

Remember that pesky pledge that all of the GOP candidates signed saying that they’d support the party’s nominee?

That was an not-so-clever ploy to keep Trump from running as a 3rd party candidate.

Never did the 15 losers think that the tables would turn and they’d be signing a commitment to support Trump.

Oops.

image

========

Cruz got a chance to clarify during the Fox News debate:

BAIER: Senator Cruz, yes or no, you will support Donald Trump is he’s the nominee?

CRUZ: Yes, because I gave my word that I would.

Oops again.

So Ted, you’re a man of your word unless …

Now, tell me again why we should ever believe a word you say?

Here’s a historical precedent that Comey might have considered…

July 13, 2016

My conclusion is that Comey ruled illogically because he didn’t want to be responsible for  tilting a potentially historic election.

For months, many left-leaners were crying “foul” … asserting that the DOJ shouldn’t get involved in cases involving high profile candidates in election years … especially if the charges are as “trivial” as carelessly handling  our nation’s top secret information.

Say, what?

Memo to Comey: It was DOJ action that changed the course of our nation in 2008 — giving us, for example, ObamaCare.

Flashback to 2008 … you know, the year that Barack Obama was elected.

Well, the DOJ didn’t indict Sen. John McCain for anything … or, overtly pave the way for Obama’s election …. but  the DOJ did tilt the scales in a defining way.

Who did they indict?

image

=======

The DOJ indicted Alaska’s Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history. He was indicted during his 2008 re-election campaign.

What were the charges, what were the implications, and how was the case ultimately resolved?

(more…)

Friendly fire: Team Hillary blasts Comey.

July 11, 2016

Comey probably expected to be attacked from the right for his illogical decision – amassing a pile of evidence that he then summarily dismissed by parsing words (“extremely careless” vs. “gross negligence”), inserting criminal intent as a criteria (apparently never hearing of, say, negligent homicide) and channeling George Castanza: “Perjury? Is that wrong?”

image
======

But, since he slipped Hillary a stay-out-of-jail-free card, I doubt that he was expecting to be attacked from the left.

Silly boy.

Quickly, Team Hillary moved from defense to offense …

========

First, the Washington Post ran an op-ed by Matthew Miller – a former director of DOJ’s public affairs office under Eric Holder.

Title of the piece was James Comey’s abuse of power.

I was expecting the guy to point out that Comey should have simply presented the evidence and let the prosecutors do the prosecuting.

Wrong.

Miller’s central premise was that Comey – since he let Hillary off the hook – had no right to present a litany of  half-baked circumstantial evidence.

How would you feel if you were innocent of any wrong-doing and a sloppy, indiscriminate fact-finder started airing your inconsequential dirty laundry.

Shame on you, Mr. Comey.

========

Piling on, Team Hillary started reprising their original talking points.

Facts be damned, there were no emails that were specifically marked classified at the time that they were sent or received.

Don’t throw arcane classification symbols at us, Mr. Comey … show us the word “classified” on the documents.

No reasonable person would expect the Secretary of State to know all of the classification symbols.

And, disregard that document she signed saying that she understood the law re: handling classified material … and the legal consequences.

She had to sign so many things that she couldn’t possibly read them all.  Get serious, Mr. Comey.

Say, what?

=======

Finally, when Wolf Blitzer – CNN’s journalistic attack dog (<= sarcasm)– sheepishly asked Hillary about Comey’s ruling, she asserted: Mr. Comey made many assertions that are based on solely on supposition.

“My record as Secretary of State demonstrates that protected classified information and the security of the country”.

English translation: There is no direct evidence that any of the information from my emails is in the hands of enemy agents. You said yourself, Mr. FBI Director.

So, Mr. Comey, prove it … or STFU.

Ouch.

=======

Comey probably didn’t expect that the proverbial dog would eat the hand that fed it the stay-out-of-jail card.

But, it did.

Comey tried to give everybody half-a-loaf.

He may have ndicted Hillary  politically by airing her carelessness and lies, but he let her off the legal hook.

As the saying goes, he might have been “too clever by half”… and simply angered both sides.

Comey said that his 2 life priorities are his family and his reputation.

Now, he might want to just focus on his family …

Is Hillary a woman of destiny?

July 9, 2016

First, let’s establish a basic point:

The killing of 5 police officers in Dallas is a horrific tragedy to their families, to the city and to the country,

The massacre may go down as a defining moment in American history.

Time will tell/

======

That said, can you imagine the likely bipolar reaction at Hillary’s campaign headquarters?

One one hand, I’m sure that they shared the heartfelt shock and grief that most Americans felt.

======

On the other hand …

Can you imagine the sigh of relief when there was nary a word about the Comey hearings on the news yesterday?

Nothing yesterday … probably won’t be anything today or tomorrow or the next day or the day after that.

A tragedy of monumental proportions has shifted the spotlight off of Hillary at a very opportune time.

I’ll skip the obvious tasteless cliche and just say:

For better or worse, maybe Hillary is a woman of destiny.

Think about it …

Trump : “Data analytics is overrated” … could he be right?

May 19, 2016

In an AP interview, Trump said that he “always thought that it (meaning data analytics) was overrated” and, accordingly, he’ll spend limited money on data operations to identify and track potential voters and to model various turnout scenarios that could give him the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency.

He’s moving away from the model Obama used successfully in his 2008 and 2012 wins, and the one that likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is trying to replicate, including hiring many of the staff that worked for Obama in his “Victory Lab”.

A data-light strategy may sound very old-school in the era of big data … especially coming from Trump …. but it reminded me of an opinion piece that Peggy Noonan wrote in the WSJ soon after Obama’s 2012 election win.

Writers Chris LaTondresse and Adam Phillips claim credit for conceiving a scenario that would place an establishment Republican into the White House even if Trump is the GOP nominee.

Sorry guys, you’re a bout a month late.

Loyal HomaFiles reader would recognize the plot from our Feb. 29 post:

The GOP can still get a “true” Republican elected … here’s how.

Since it’s timely (and getting jacked without attribution), I thought I’d reprise it today.

=======

Let’s start with some basic assumptions:

(1) Trump hijacks the GOP and wins the nomination … much to the dismay of the GOP “establishment”.

(2) Trump and Hillary fight a tightly contested toss-up race.

======

So, how can the establishment get a “true” – or at least “truer” Republican elected.

It wouldn’t be easy, but it’s possible.

Let’s connect a couple of dots.

Dot #1: Politico is reporting that some big GOP donors are researching ballot-access requirements for independent candidates in case Trump wraps up the GOP nomination.

Dot #2: The electoral map and the quirks of the electoral college process.

There’s an out-of-the box way to make a “true” Republican president … really.

Trump’s appeal among the “precariat”…

March 18, 2016

From a very interesting election analysis in the Orange County Register by Joel Kotkin – Presidential Fellow in Urban Futures at Chapman University …

That said, I’ll fill in his circle on the scantron ballot if it’s Trump vs. Hillary in Novemeber.

March 16, 2016

NY Times decided to take a shot at Trump’s opulence in a piece titled: A King in His Castle

Here’s an excerpt to set the context …

Everything seemed to sparkle at the Mar-a-Lago estate here on a recent afternoon.

The sun glinted off the pool and the black Secret Service S.U.V.s in the circular driveway.

Palm trees rustled in a warm breeze, croquet balls clicked and a security guard stood at the entrance to Donald J. Trump’s private living quarters.

You can always tell when the king is here.

Mar-a-Lago is where Mr. Trump comes to escape, entertain and luxuriate in a Mediterranean-style manse.

The king was returning that day to his Versailles, a 118-room snowbird’s paradise that will become a winter White House if he is elected president.

It’s hard to stop bullying if the bullies keep winning …

March 2, 2016

Years ago, my sons’ high school headmaster (aka. “principal”) launched a program aimed at civility.

He was concerned that kids were becoming disrespectful to adults … and to each other.

Most parents thought the idea was a bit quirky… students had no idea what he was talking about.

The guy eventually got canned when he allowed police into the school to arrest some kids who were peddling drugs … a rather uncivil behavior. (Parents thought that letting police into the school was uncivil …)

My take: the guy was a couple of decades ahead of his time.

Fast forward to today.

As near as I can tell, the anti-bullying campaigns and rhetoric have been largely pushed to the back burner … only being cameoed when there is a teen tragedy directly linked to bullying.

Why is that happening?

Simple.

The bullies keep emerging as winners … and winning beats losing.

Of course, most of his material is cooked up by his writers.

A heckler was shouting that Rubio was an empty suit.

“At least it’s not a Trump suit that’s made in China.”

Great line. Great timing.

Trump: “I got shlonged, eh?”

February 2, 2016

Ok, he didn;t say it (but he should have).

And, Hillary didn’t say it (but she could have).

And the NY tabloids didn’t say  it (a missed opportunity).

The NY Daily News did demonstrate some good old NY values in their headline today:

image

=====

And, in my opinion, the NY Post hit the nail on the head:

image

Couple of quick takes:

Conventional wisdom was that Cruz blew it with his “New York values” remark … especially when Trump cleverly tied it to 9-11.

It wasn’t about 9-11, it was about pushy arrogance …  you know, bullying … the “we’re smart, rest of America is dumb” bravado.

Geez, the mainstream media missed that one …. but the dumb folks in Iowa picked up on it.

=====

Then there’s the sophomoric “born in Canada” rift.

Trump probably figured that slight would work … after all, he killed Bush by simply characterizing him as” low energy’ … being born in Canada has got to be worse than that, right?

=====

Speaking of Bush … here’s a grand irony.

Trump buried any hopes Jeb had to become President.

So, what does Jeb do?

He spends 10s of millions of dollars trying to scorch Rubio.

What’s the outcome?

Well, the attack ads were probably just enough to keep Marco from beating Trump out for the #2 finish.

If Trump had finished 3rd, it might have been fatal to his “I’m a winner” campaign pitch.

But, as 1st runner-up, he lives to campaign another day.

So, it may turn out that Jeb was a king-maker … with the crown going to his nemesis.

Ironic, right?

“Authoritarians” for Trump … pssst, that may be you!

January 20, 2016

Interesting piece in Politico

Let’s start with a quick test.

Imagine yourself as a parent.

Would you prefer that your children be:

  1. respectful or independent
  2. obedient or self-reliant
  3. well-behaved or considerate
  4. well-mannered or curious

Pick one from each of the above pairs.

Let’s see how ‘authoritarian’ you are …

My nomination for President … experience, integrity, leadership.

December 21, 2015

Last week, I built a partial Cabinet from the current cast of GOP Presidential candidates.

HHS – Dr. Ben Carson

Commerce – Ms. Carly Fiorina

State – Sen. Marco Rubio

Justice (AG) – Gov. Chris Christie

V.P. – Gov. John Kasich

For details & rational, See Let’s build a cabinet ….

OK, I’m ready to declare my pick for the top spot.

It’s a long-shot, especially since he’s not a declared candidate.

But I can dream, can’t I ?

I hoping that since the current field – on both sides – doesn’t have a president-ready candidate, that this guy will ride in on a white horse … or, be dragged in …. I don’t really care.

Here’s his top line bio:

Education: William & Mary, University of Chicago Law School (doubt that he studied under Prof. Obama)

Gov’t experience: DOJ under both GOP and Dem administrations

Business experience: Worked in both the defense sector and the financial sector (not just a political hack)

Proven track record: Has been demonstrably successful in everything he has done

High Integrity: Consistently praised by both ends of the political spectrum  — not for being bi-partisan, but for being non-partisan

Apolitical: He’s clearly “in the game” for the right reasons – to serve the country and its people.

Independent: Earned enough FU-money in his real world jobs that he can’t be bought or swayed.

Orientation: “Gets it” regarding the war on terror … realistic, aggressive

Strong leadership: When the guy talks, I think he’s telling the truth and glad that he’s got a hand on the tiller (think, the polar opposite to Obama’s speech after San Bernardino.)

Pretty solid, right?

So, who’s my pick?

Let’s build a cabinet ….

December 18, 2015

During this week’s GOP debate, the obvious became clear to me.

Like many (most?) people, I have trouble envisioning any of the candidates sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office (or standing at a podium in front of the desk).

But, there’s premium lemonade that can be squeezed from the cast of characters.

Specifically, if these boys and girl can modify their behavior to swallow their egos and play nice-nice with one another, I think a powerful cabinet can be put together .

Here’s the team I’d put on the field …

GOP Debate: 2 zingers worth highlighting …

November 12, 2015

I watched most of Tuesday’s debate and listened to the rest driving home.

Here are the two zingers that I thought were noteworthy.

The first was Ted Cruz on illegal immigration

After ranting about how insulted he was that some folks say he’s anti-immigrant, he quipped:

“When the mainstream media covers illegal immigration they do not see it as an economic issue, but I can tell that for millions of Americans watching this [debate] at home it is a very personal economic issue.

Things would be reported differently if the jobs being threatened by illegal immigration were those that hit a little closer to the pocketbooks of disinterested parties.

I will say, the politics of it would be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande.

Or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press.

Then we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befalling our nation.”

Nicely put, Ted

But, my overall favorite was from Rand Paul.

Hispanics are down on Donald, but he may be holding 93 million Trump cards …

September 1, 2015

Everybody knows that Trump can’t win because he alienated Hispanics by saying that he’d build the wall and send illegals back to their home countries … where they can queue up to enter the U.S. legally.

For a typical pindit argument, see Business Insider  “Donald Trump may be dooming the GOP with a 10% chunk of the electorate”

Need data?

A recent Gallup poll has Trump’s favorability with Hispanics “underwater” by a whooping 51 points … that is, the spread between Hispanics viewing him favorably and those viewing him unfavorably is 51 points.

Pundits assert confidently that Trump can’t win because a candidate unless he is competitive with Hispanics … and Trump isn’t close to being competitive.

Not so fast, pundits …

Here’s a wild election scenario that you won’t see anywhere else …

August 7, 2015

First, a couple of disclaimers:

This is neither my prediction of what’s to come, nor my preference..

It’s just an oddball scenario that could conceivably happen.

Bottom line:

All the pundits say that if Trump runs as a 3rd party candidate, then the GOP is toast..

I say: Not so fast …

Quick: Has any 3rd party presidential candidate ever won any electoral votes?

August 5, 2015

Lots of chatter around whether Trump (or Sanders) will run as 3rd party candidates.

Pundits are unanimous that a Trump 3rd party run would doom the GOP and hand the election to Hillary (presuming that she’s not in jail).

I’m not so sure.

In the next couple of posts, I’ll build to a scenario that has Trump running as a 3rd party candidate, but the GOP nominee getting the keys to the White House (<= note how I strained to avoid using the word “winning”).
